The Peone family has been coordinating the Last Name Basketball Tournament “Braggin Rights” since; it’s conception by Cub Peone in 1989. It is a Co-ed Basketball tournament in which all team members must have the same last name. Traditionally, this tournament is held the weekend after High School play has ended. This weekend was chosen to accommodate the families that have kids still playing H.S ball at that time.
There are a few aspects of this tournament that make it a very enjoyable / highly anticipated event for many families from all around the Pacific Northwest. This is a competitive tournament with very talented teams. It is a family orientated, drug and alcohol free event. It allows an opportunity for families to come together for the weekend and compete as a team against other families. In this tournament, it is common-place to see kids on the court, playing basketball with their cousins, brothers, sisters, parents and grandparents. In previous years, Co-ed participation was optional. To promote a more family orientated event and to showcase the talented female athletes which attend this tournament, starting 2011, we have decided to make this a Co-ed mandatory tournament in which each family will be required to have at least 1 female on the court at all times. Female participants still receive 3 points for a 2 pointer and 4 points for a 3 pointer
The first year of this tournament there were only eight families competing and was held in a single gym. Over the last 20 years it has grown to a sixteen to twenty team tournament utilizing two gym facilities for the entire weekend. Awards are given for male and female participants, MVP’s guy/girl, Hustle’s guy/girl, 3-point champion, team awards 1st through 4th, team sportsmanship award, all stars and a team consolation bracket award (3 games guaranteed).
This is a large and expensive event. Through community support (which is vital), fund raising activities, and entrance fees we have been able to maintain a very high quality tournament for everyone involved... Feel free to contact me for any further information.
Sincerely,
Randy Peone
